Schloss Schlemmin
Schloss Schlemmin stands in the village of Schlemmin in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. The building is a Gothic Revival schloss, its present form dating from 1846–50. The foundations, however, belong to a medieval fortress from the 14th century. Architect Eduard Knoblauch designed the current structure for Wilhelm Ulrich von Thun. During the Second World War the castle served as a hospital and refugee camp. After the war it became state property in East Germany and took on various roles. The schloss is now a hotel and restaurant. In 1999 an entrepreneur from Bremen bought the neglected house and began restoration. Work continued until 2002, when the building opened as a hotel. The restoration preserved Gothic Revival details alongside medieval foundations. Guests can therefore stay inside a structure that combines two historical layers. Inside, the hotel offers rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The restaurant occupies vaulted cellars that once belonged to the medieval fortress. Views extend over the surrounding countryside of rolling farmland and woodland. The building’s quiet setting makes it a peaceful retreat. Its architecture tells the story of more than six centuries in a single place.
