Zuberec
Zuberec is a village in northern Slovakia at the foot of the Western Tatras. It sits 760 metres above sea level in the Orava region, surrounded by the Roháče mountains. The municipality covers 72 square kilometres and offers tourist facilities, restaurants and a museum. The name comes from the European bison, once common here. A neo-Gothic church built in the 1930s stands in the centre. The village hosts cultural and sporting events throughout the year. A folk festival, alpine skiing race and triathlon draw visitors in summer and winter. Dog-sled racing also takes place here. The open-air Museum of the Orava Village preserves regional wooden houses, a 15th-century church and a working watermill. A graveyard with 19th-century gravestones adds to the display. Paths lead from Zuberec into the Roháče mountains for hiking and skiing. Three ski resorts operate nearby: Janovky, Milotín and Zverovka Spálená. The museum gardens show old farming methods and livestock. A stone cross from 1839 stands by the church, and relics of Saint Vendelin are kept inside.
