St Laurence's Church, Ludlow

St Laurence’s Church stands on the hilltop at the heart of Ludlow, its square bell tower rising above the rooftops of the medieval town. Built in the late 11th century and rebuilt in 1199, the church has grown through the centuries with additions in the 15th and 19th centuries. Its Perpendicular tower reaches 48 metres and offers wide views over the town and the surrounding countryside. The church is the largest parish church in Shropshire and holds Grade I listed status. It was praised by John Leland in 1540 as “very Fayre and large and richly adorned.” The hexagonal south porch, one of only three such structures in England, serves as the main entrance. The church is famous for its choir stalls with twenty-eight misericords carved from oak. Sixteen of these date from around 1425 and show scenes of daily life, including a wrestling match, an ale-wife carried off by demons, and a prosperous householder surrounded by tools. The carvings also feature heraldic symbols such as the antelope badge of Henry VI and the ostrich feathers linked to the Prince of Wales. The chancel contains fine stained glass, including a window depicting the martyrdom of St Laurence and another illustrating the Ten Commandments. The Lady Chapel and St Catherine’s Chapel add to the church’s architectural variety. Visitors find a place shaped by centuries of worship and local history. The nave is being reorganised to allow more community use, with moveable seating and new facilities planned. Outside, a stone tablet marks the ashes of poet A. E. Housman, who wrote of the church tower in his poems. Nearby lies the stump of a cherry tree planted in his memory. The church grounds also hold the ashes of sculptor Adrian Jones. Inside, the vault above the stone lantern and the monuments to figures like Sir John Bridgeman and Admiral James Vashon add layers of meaning to the visit.
