Emmanuel Church, Wylde Green

Emmanuel Church stands in Wylde Green, a suburb of Royal Sutton Coldfield. The building is a Grade II* listed parish church of the Church of England. William Bidlake designed the church, and construction began in 1909. The nave and aisles were finished before the First World War. Work on the chancel resumed after the war and was completed around 1926. The church’s Willis organ dates from 1932. It was originally installed in the Seventh Church of Christ Scientist in South Kensington. Stephen Bicknell created a Gothic case with a sweeping gabled centre for its new home. The organ’s specification can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register. Inside, the church features the nave and aisles built before the war. The chancel, added later, reflects the delayed completion of the original plans. A lady chapel and parish hall were added in 1967. The organ’s Gothic case and gabled centre stand as a focal point in the interior.
