Kilburn tube station

Kilburn tube station stands in the north-west London Borough of Brent on the A5 Kilburn High Road. It sits between Willesden Green and West Hampstead stations on the Jubilee line in fare zone two. The station opened in 1879 on the Metropolitan line and was rebuilt in the 1930s when services transferred to the Bakerloo line. In 1979 the Jubilee line took over, though the 1930s building remains. The viaduct beside the station still bears the Metropolitan Railway name from 1914. The station is worth the journey because it shows how London’s Underground grew from a single line to today’s network. The quadrupling of tracks in the 1910s eased congestion on the Metropolitan line. In 1933 the London Passenger Transport Board reorganised services, moving Kilburn to the Bakerloo line. The Jubilee line’s arrival in 1979 brought modern trains and step-free access. Inside, visitors find a refurbished ticket hall with new lighting, CCTV and train indicators. A lift provides step-free access from street to platform. Outside, the A5 carries buses including routes 16 and 32. Nearby landmarks include the Red Lion pub, Kiln Theatre and Kilburn Grange Park. The station’s heritage features were kept during the 2005 upgrade, linking past and present.
