Suhlburg

The Suhlburg was a hilltop castle built in the late 14th century by a councillor from Schwäbisch Hall. It stands on a spur above the Schmiedbach valley near the hamlet of Suhlburg. The Sulmeister family owned the castle until the 16th century. The castle passed to the Senft von Suhlburg family in the 15th century. Melchior Senft completed the building in 1516, but a fire in 1534 destroyed it. A family legend blames the blaze on damp clothes left near a stove. The Senfts sold the ruins in 1543 to the counts of Hohenlohe, who did not rebuild it. Today only traces of the foundations and ditches remain. A modern house now occupies the site. Visitors can still see the low earthworks and imagine the castle’s former walls. The quiet valley below offers a peaceful walk to the spot.
