Hales and Shadwell Woods

Hales and Shadwell Woods lie north-east of Saffron Walden in Essex. The site covers 15.4 hectares and includes two separate woods under half a mile apart. Shadwell Wood is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust and covers 7.1 hectares. Hales Wood holds National Nature Reserve status and appears in the Nature Conservation Review. Both woods consist of ancient coppice wet ash and maple on chalky boulder clay. The woods support a rich shrub layer with wayfaring-trees, guelder roses, spurge-laurel and the nationally uncommon oxlip. Seven species of orchid have been recorded in Shadwell Wood, which also features herb-rich grassy rides. Access to Shadwell Wood is available via a footpath from Walden Road, while Hales Wood remains closed to visitors. A visit reveals a peaceful landscape shaped by centuries of coppicing. The diverse ground flora and orchid populations reflect the site’s ecological importance. The contrast between the closed canopy and open rides creates varied habitats. The footpath to Shadwell Wood offers a quiet walk through typical Essex countryside. The woods stand as quiet reminders of the region’s ancient woodland heritage.
