St Peter, Greenhill

St Peter’s Greenhill is a Church of England parish church in the Greenhill area on the edge of Sheffield. Built between 1964 and 1965, it replaced St James Norton which had served the area before the housing estate arrived. The architects Oxley and Bussey designed the building in a modern style for its time. In May 1965 the Bishop of Derby consecrated the new church on its completion. In 1999 English Heritage gave the church Grade II listed status for its architectural interest. The church stands as a simple rectangle of brick and glass set among the 1960s houses. Inside, the worship space is uncluttered with a flat ceiling and rows of clear-glazed windows along each side. The altar sits against the east wall beneath a plain cross. A small narthex at the west end provides a quiet place for coats and bags before entering. Outside, the churchyard is small but well kept, with a few mature trees and paved paths. The brick walls and flat roof echo the estate’s contemporary style. From the pavement the building reads as a calm landmark among the surrounding streets.
