Rotunda
The Rotunda stands on Woolwich Common in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It is a 24-sided wooden building designed by John Nash in 1814. Originally built as a temporary structure for Carlton House, it was later moved to Woolwich and converted into a permanent museum. The building is now Grade II* listed and remains a notable example of early 19th-century architecture. Its unusual polygonal shape and self-supporting roof were innovative for the time. The Rotunda was first used for the Wellington Fête in 1814, attended by over 2,000 guests. The Rotunda is worth visiting for its engineering significance and historical connections. Its roof was one of the first in Britain to use laminated timber and iron connectors without glue. The building’s transfer to Woolwich in 1819–1820 involved modifications by John Adey Repton, who added a brick drum and a central Doric column. The Royal Military Repository, founded in 1778 by Captain William Congreve, played a key role in its relocation. The Rotunda’s central column bears the names of 39 Royal Artillery officers, spanning 170 years of the regiment’s history. Figures like General Sir Edward Sabine and Major General Sir Henry Tombs are among those commemorated. Inside, visitors find a circular space with a central freestone column inscribed with names. The brick drum and original timber bracing remain visible, showing the building’s structural evolution. The Rotunda sits on a prominent spot on Woolwich Common, offering a quiet contrast to the surrounding area. Its historical inscriptions and architectural details provide insight into the Royal Artillery’s past. The building’s uncluttered interior and lack of internal columns reflect its original purpose as a flexible reception space. Today, it stands as a rare surviving example of Nash’s temporary structures.
