Dorfkirche Schönhausen (Elbe)

The early-12th-century brick church of St Marien and St Willebrord stands in the flat Elbe valley village of Schönhausen. Built in the Romanesque style, it is one of the oldest brick buildings in central Germany and was first recorded in 1212. The six-bay basilica has a square choir and semicircular apse, capped by a 15th-century roof frame dated 1484–85. Its west tower, unusually broad, is decorated with Lombard bands and round-arch friezes, while the south and west doorways show stepped shafts and zigzag mouldings. The church holds outstanding works of medieval art. A carved oak crucifix from about 1236, with separately nailed feet and upright stance, ranks among the finest late-Romanesque sculptures in the region. The baroque altarpiece, added around 1700, frames a painted Crucifixion between life-size Evangelist figures and a Resurrection panel above. A richly carved oak pulpit, probably by the same hand as the Brandenburg cathedral pulpit, still carries its clock face. The nave’s north side displays 1700s noble pews adorned with Bismarck and Katte coats of arms. Inside, the choir vault and apse half-dome survive from the 13th century, while the organ case, built by Gottlieb Scholtze about 1760–70, shows delicate rococo carving. The south aisle contains three 16th-century gravestones of Bismarcks, and along the walls hang painted and carved epitaphs for Georg Friedrich, Christoph Friedrich I, Georg Heinrich and Augustus I and II von Bismarck. Outside, the tower’s bell chamber opens through round-headed louvres beneath gablets with small round-arch blinds, and the brickwork bears the ritual scratches of generations.
