Craighall Castle

Craighall Castle stands in Ceres, a village in Fife, Scotland. It was built in 1637 by Sir Thomas Hope on land once owned by Andrew Kinninmond. Before Hope’s time, an earlier tower occupied the site but was demolished long ago. The castle itself fell into ruin and was pulled down in 1957. Only parts of its thick stone walls survive today, standing as quiet reminders of its past. The castle was constructed with rough rubble and dressed stone, its walls measuring between one and 1.3 metres thick. One section of wall remains particularly striking: ten metres long and 3.5 metres high. In 1954, a fire in the granary led to the removal of the old tower, hastening the castle’s decline. Despite its ruinous state, the site still draws visitors curious about its history. Visitors to Craighall Castle find a peaceful ruin surrounded by farmland near the village of Ceres. The surviving wall stretches across the grassy site, offering a clear view of its sturdy construction. The castle’s brief appearance on the cover of Cradle of Filth’s 1996 album *Dusk and Her Embrace* adds a modern cultural link.
