Pflegamt Barbing

The Pflegamt Barbing was a regional administration centre in Barbing, Upper Palatinate. It stood beside the Danube near Regensburg from 1463 until 1803. The seat of the Pfleger, the local official, was Schloss Barbing, a medieval stronghold rebuilt after the Thirty Years’ War. The site shows how local power shifted from local knights to the Bishop of Regensburg and then to the Bavarian state. In the 18th century the Pfleger also managed distant estates such as Auburg and Siegenstein. After secularisation the castle passed to the Prince Primate of Regensburg and later to King Ludwig I, who gave it to Bishop Johann Michael Sailer as a summer residence. Visitors today enter the former castle that now serves as Barbing’s town hall. The building still carries traces of its 18th-century conversion into a residence. Around it lie quiet streets and the broad Danube valley, linking the site to the wider history of the Upper Palatinate.
