Church of St Mary, Hemington

St Mary’s Church in Hemington is a small Norman church in the quiet Somerset countryside. Its oldest parts, the south aisle and nave, date from the 1340s. The tower was added between 1480 and 1500, rising above the surrounding fields. In the 19th century Sir George Gilbert Scott’s office carried out further work. The church has been repaired and reorganised several times since it was first built. The church belongs to the Anglican parish of Hardington Vale. It sits within the archdeaconry of Wells in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Services continue to be held there every week. The building is recognised for its historical importance and is listed among Grade I structures in the Mendip district. Visitors find a plain stone church with simple windows and a sturdy tower. Inside, the nave and aisle show the marks of centuries of change. The tower offers views over the flat Somerset Levels. The churchyard contains a few weathered gravestones. The peaceful setting remains largely unchanged since the Middle Ages.
