St Augustine's Church, Hedon

St Augustine’s Church stands in the market town of Hedon in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is a large medieval building, begun in 1190, and is recognised as the finest early pointed church in Holderness. The church is dedicated to St Augustine of Hippo and is known locally as the King of Holderness. A lofty tower rises above the crossing, making the church a landmark visible from all approaches to the town. The building has a nave with aisles, transepts and a chancel, all arranged around the central tower. Small buttresses and pointed windows with delicate tracery mark the exterior. The church is worth the journey for its exceptional architecture and the care taken in its restoration. In the 19th century the rector, the Rev. W. Wasse, oversaw careful repairs that returned the church to a dignified condition. The tower’s pierced battlement and crocketed pinnacles show the skill of medieval masons. Inside, the nave arches rest on clustered columns, and a gallery at the west end holds an organ built in 1829. The building’s value was recorded in parliamentary returns as £117 per year, and it was held with the vicarage of Preston. Visitors find a calm interior of plain dignity after the careful 19th-century restoration. The nave and aisles are separated by pointed arches, and the transepts still show fragments of their original detailing. A mutilated effigy in chain armour stands beneath a large south transept window with cinquefoil tracery. The tower’s two storeys of three-light windows and the elegant recessed doorway in the north transept remain fine examples of early architecture. From outside, the church’s tower dominates views of Hedon, marking the town’s historic heart.
