Museum of Dartmoor Life

The Museum of Dartmoor Life sits in Okehampton, a town on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. It occupies an early 19th-century mill with a working waterwheel beside the building. The collections trace how people have lived on Dartmoor and in Okehampton from prehistoric times to today. The museum is run by an independent charitable trust with a board of trustees. It opened in 1981 to preserve local social history. Visitors find displays that show farming, mining, transport and domestic life across the centuries. Artefacts include tools, clothing, photographs and documents donated by local families. The museum recognises the work of the Dartmoor Society and the Okehampton History Society in gathering these items. Exhibits explain how granite was quarried and carried to distant cities. There are also reconstructions of a 19th-century kitchen and a Victorian schoolroom. The building itself has three floors of galleries connected by original staircases. The waterwheel outside turns when water is released from a leat fed by the River Okement. A small garden area shows plants once gathered for food and medicine. Visitors often pause by the mill’s stonework, which still bears the date 1812. The museum offers a quiet space to reflect on how a landscape shaped the lives of those who lived within it.
