Belcher's and Broadfield Woods

Belcher’s and Broadfield Woods lie between Halstead and Braintree in Essex. The 14.4-hectare site is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust as the Brookes Nature Reserve. It is a coppice woodland on chalky boulder clay, with several woodland types. Wet ash and maple grow alongside pedunculate oak and hornbeam. Acid birch, ash and lime also appear in the mix. The ground flora includes species that are locally uncommon. Greater butterfly-orchid and bird’s-nest orchid can be found among the plants. A variety of butterflies flit through the trees and clearings. Small ponds hold frogs and newts, adding to the site’s wildlife interest. Footpaths cross the woods, allowing visitors to explore. The paths wind through different woodland types and past the ponds. The reserve offers a quiet place to walk among uncommon plants and wildlife.
