Seven Barrows

Seven Barrows is a Bronze Age burial site near Lambourn in Berkshire. It sits on a stretch of chalk grassland in the upper part of the valley, covering about four hectares. The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust looks after the land, which is protected as both a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Scheduled Monument. The site is known for its wildflowers and herbs, with more than a hundred species recorded. Among them grow small blue, brown argus, chalkhill blue, dark green fritillary and the rare marsh fritillary butterflies. The grassland remains largely undisturbed, giving these plants and insects space to thrive. Visitors walk over open turf where Bronze Age mounds still stand. The barrows appear as low grassy humps scattered across the slope. From the ridge there are wide views over the Lambourn Downs, with the valley stretching away below.
