Trimley Marshes

Trimley Marshes is a 77-hectare nature reserve on the western edge of Trimley St Mary, close to Felixstowe in Suffolk. It lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and overlaps several protected zones: the Orwell Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest, the Stour and Orwell Estuaries Ramsar site, and a Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds. The reserve is managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. It contains a reservoir, several islands, reedbeds and marshes. Access is gained from Cordy’s Lane. The site supports a large and varied bird population. Regular visitors include redshanks, avocets, oystercatchers, little grebes and gadwalls. These species feed and breed among the wetlands, reedbeds and open water. The mosaic of habitats attracts both resident and migratory birds throughout the year. The reserve’s designation recognises its importance for wetland wildlife. It forms part of a wider network of estuaries and marshes along the Suffolk coast. A network of paths allows exploration of the reserve. Visitors can walk beside the reservoir, cross small bridges to the islands and follow boardwalks through the reedbeds. Views extend across the Orwell Estuary and towards Felixstowe. The landscape is open and spacious, with wide skies typical of the Suffolk coast. Benches offer places to sit and watch birds. The site provides a quiet place to observe nature close to an urban edge.
