Edinburgh Park

Edinburgh Park is a modern business district in South Gyle, on the western edge of Edinburgh. It sits beside the Edinburgh City Bypass, close to Edinburgh Airport, and centres on an artificial loch designed by American architect Richard Meier. The park opened in 1995 and already contains a bar, a nursery, and several sculptures including a seven-metre-tall Paolozzi Vulcan relocated from Newcastle. Two railway stations serve the area, one on the Glasgow to Edinburgh line and another on the Fife Circle Line just a fifteen-minute walk away. Edinburgh Trams began calling at the park in 2014, linking it with the city centre and the airport. The owners plan to expand the park into a cultural hub with more sculptures, a movie-themed bar, and a performance venue. A new indoor arena for eight thousand five hundred people is under construction and due to open by 2028. Recent development includes over a million square feet of offices, shops, restaurants, leisure facilities, and a public square across forty-eight acres. The scheme also adds a new crossing over the tram line and a health centre, making it the city’s largest development in more than ten years. Critics note the tighter layout will increase traffic around the nearby Gyle and Gogar roundabouts at peak times. Visitors find wide paths around the loch and a growing collection of public artworks including busts of Scottish poets. The tram stops at Edinburgh Park Station, Edinburgh Park Central, and Gyle Centre run every seven to ten minutes. Lothian Buses and other operators serve the area with frequent routes, while the new public square and shops sit among the office buildings. The planned arena and cultural venues will add concerts, films, and events to the business district. The park’s landscaped surroundings and modern architecture create a quiet contrast to the busy bypass just beyond.
