Kliška tvrđava
Klis Fortress is a medieval fortress located above the village of Klis, 11 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea, on a pass between the mountains Mosor and Kozjak. It stands at an altitude of 360 metres, northeast of Split. The fortress overlooks Split, Salona, Solin, Kaštela, Trogir, and most of the central Dalmatian islands. Its strategic position made it a key defensive point throughout history, controlling access to Bosnia, Dalmatia, and inland Croatia. The fortress has been a significant military and political site for over 2,000 years. It was a stronghold for the Illyrians, later controlled by the Romans, and became a royal seat for Croatian dukes and kings. Duke Mislav made it his throne in the 9th century, and Duke Trpimir I expanded it and built a church and monastery. In the 13th century, it was governed by Croatian nobility, including the House of Šubić. The fortress was crucial during the Ottoman wars, defended by Croatian captain Petar Kružić, and fell to the Ottomans in 1537. Visitors can explore the fortress's ruins, which include remnants of ancient walls, towers, and a museum displaying arms, armor, and traditional uniforms. The site offers panoramic views of Split and surrounding areas, with access to the valley below and the nearby Roman road Via Gabiniana. The fortress's history is marked by numerous sieges and military conflicts, reflecting its importance as a strategic stronghold.
