Heimenburg castle ruin – above the roofs of Hainburg
High above Hainburg, the ruin of the Heimenburg crowns the Schlossberg – one of the largest castle complexes in Austria. This 12th- and 13th-century hilltop castle guarded the Danube frontier; from its walls the view stretches far across the river into Slovakia.
Legend has it that Kriemhild of the Nibelungenlied celebrated her wedding to King Etzel here. The climb to the ruin rewards you with history and a magnificent panorama alike – a highlight of any visit to Hainburg.
