Braunsberg

Braunsberg – Celtic hill above the Danube

The 346-metre Braunsberg rises above Hainburg right at the "Porta Hungarica", the Hungarian Gate, where the Danube breaks eastward between the Hainburg Hills and the Little Carpathians. The Celts built an important oppidum here; finds attest to a La Tène-era settlement of the Boii.

Today the Braunsberg is a nature reserve with rare dry grasslands and a superb viewpoint: the panorama sweeps across the Danube and the March wetlands to Bratislava and into Slovakia. A short, rewarding trail leads up from the village – perfect for an afternoon outing.
