Heidentor
The Heidentor – landmark of Carnuntum
The Heidentor (Pagans’ Gate) near Petronell-Carnuntum is the emblem of the former Roman metropolis of Carnuntum and one of Austria’s best-known Roman monuments. This monumental four-pillared triumphal monument (a quadrifrons) was raised around 350 AD under Emperor Constantius II; today two of the original four pillars still stand some 15 metres tall above the fields.
Carnuntum was the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia Superior, a legionary fortress and trading city of up to 50,000 people. Freely accessible at the edge of the Carnuntum Archaeological Park, the Heidentor is a favourite day-trip and photo spot – especially striking in the evening light.
