Burg Wurmlingen

The Burg Wurmlingen, also called Schanze auf dem Aienbuch, was a spur castle on a southern spur 1 500 metres north-west of Wurmlingen’s church. It stood at 840.5 metres above sea level on the edge of a steep slope. The remains are earthworks and ditches from the early medieval fortification. Archaeologists recognise it as part of a network of defensive sites between the young Danube and Lake Constance. Research in the 1970s and 1990s recorded its walls and trenches. Historians such as Hans-Wilhelm Heine and Hansjürgen Brachmann studied its role in early medieval warfare. Visitors today walk over grassy ramparts that once held wooden palisades. The view stretches across the valley towards the Black Forest. The site is quiet, with only the wind and birds breaking the silence. Interpretive signs explain how the fort protected the surrounding land. It is a place where earthworks speak louder than any ruined stone.
