Epitaphs at the Parish Church

Thirty-two epitaphs and gravestones are set into the outer and inner walls of the parish church — funerary monuments of prominent Radkersburg burgher and noble families from the 15th to the 18th century. They are a reminder that the church was once ringed by a graveyard; when it was closed, the slabs were placed against the walls. Among the oldest is the gravestone of Hans Eggenberger, who died in 1481. The stone made for Achatz von Maghnitz in 1526 shows the relief of a knight in armour. Many slabs share the same layout: a crucifixion scene beneath a round arch, below it a coat of arms framed in the scrolled strapwork the Renaissance was fond of, and an inscription in Gothic minuscule at the foot — today often so weathered that names and dates can barely be read.
